Are Your Skin Care Products Safe And Effective

Beware Of Toxic Ingredients In Skin Care Products

Pevonia Caviar Line

Clients ask me to check out their skin care products to see if they are safe and effective. I follow the Scientific Rule: The more you irritate the skin, the more it becomes inflamed, the faster you age and the more you are prone to skin cancer. By looking at the ingredient label, I am able to tell if they are safe or not but not really tell if they are effective. To check to see if the product is safe, I look to see what ingredients are irritants and possible or known carcinogens. One such ingredient, Triclosan, an antibacterial, was found to cause cancer in mice, so it is a possible carcinogenic for us. It can be found in skin care products, toothpastes, deodorant and more. This ingredient was questionable in the late 1990s and was taken out of the Pevonia products that I carry in less than a year. Yet many skin care companies still contain it.

The products’ effectiveness can’t be told by the ingredients list. You really need to know your company and the testing they do. Two things that are important to know: the percentage of the active ingredients in the product and if there is a special delivery system to help the ingredients to do their work. The active ingredients such as peptides, stem cells, and vitamin C, etc. need to have a certain percentage in the product to be beneficial. Also an ingredient like vitamin C needs a special manufacturing process to be beneficial in your bottle and effective.

It’s not easy for you tell if the product is going to be effective. That’s where your facial specialist comes in to help. I had researched many companies before I chose the Pevonia line. So according to your skin’s needs, I can let you know what products would help your skin to be healthier and younger looking.

The more you irritate the skin, the more it becomes inflamed, the faster you age and the more you are prone to skin cancer. If you have questions about your products, just call me. I would be glad to help and recommend.

Feed Your Face With Kale

Fruits, Vegetables, Plants Secrets To Healthy Skin

The superfood kale is now making its way into skin care with the organic brand Éminence set to release a citrus and kale serum next month.

Kale is high in vitamin K. Just one cup of chopped kale contains 206 percent of your recommended daily intake of vitamin A, 134 percent of vitamin C, and a whopping 684 percent of vitamin K – but would you put it on your face? With added ingredients like spinach, broccoli, avocado, lemon, and grapefruit, the $110 serum claims to brighten and lighten sun-damaged skin, prevent inflammation, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Spinach is loaded with beta-carotene and lutein, two nutrients that have been shown to improve skin elasticity, according to a study in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry.

Meanwhile avocado – applied topically – has long been touted to moisturize the skin, treat sunburn and reduce wrinkles, and grapefruit, loaded with vitamin C, helps fade spots by reducing excess production of skin pigment. And kale’s vitamin K, which in the body plays a major role in helping blood to clot properly, is often used topically to treat rosacea, remove spider veins and stretch marks, and speed up skin healing after surgery – reducing bruising, swelling and scars.

Dr. Pauline Hili, who is behind the skin care brand Nourish and who recently launched a kale anti-aging eye cream, told The Telegraph that ‘kale is a super-food with one of the highest levels of beneficial vitamins, particularly vitamin K.

“We know that topical addition of vitamins can be up to 100 times more effective for the skin,” she explained. “It just makes sense to use this ingredient as a powerhouse to re-invigorate the skin. Its delicate effectiveness makes it particularly suitable for around the eye.”

Nourish’s Revital-Eyes Kale Biomimetic Anti-Aging Eye Cream promises to protect skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and redness, while promoting healing and a reduction in puffiness. But while the benefits of eating kale, which is also loaded with antioxidants that can quench free radicals, have been proven time and time again, the dark green leaf still needs further study when it comes to its effectiveness in skin care according to dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe.

“Kale has the potential to be a great anti-aging ingredient and could potentially even help boost the protective effects of sunscreen,” Dr. Bowe told MailOnline. “But it still needs further study to ensure that those effective ingredients can penetrate the surface layers of the skin, and are stabilized in such a way as to still be effective by the time they reach the skin.”

That someone is Éminence and that product is a natural, organic, citrus + kale serum, or as the internet has dubbed it, the “salad serum.” This liquid claims to brighten your skin, lighten sun damage, reduce fine lines and wrinkles and prevent inflammation. It also contains spinach, broccoli, avocado, lemon and grapefruit (which I swear is a near-identical juice recipe I’ve had before).

After reading about this kale serum, I checked out other Éminence products and it is a veritable feast of food products. At a quick glance I saw guava, blackberry, red currant, tomato seed, even yam and pumpkin. The kale serum is not out until June, so until then, we’ll just have to stick to kale smoothies and salads.

Can Some Cosmetics and Skin Care Products Transmit Disease?

Animal-Based Skin Care Products Carry Unnecessary Risks

Why are women dying from Alzheimer’s at a higher rate than men? Could it be that our cosmetic procedures and products are prion pathways? Doctors say “yes.” Other risky cosmetic procedures involve facial injections for filling wrinkles or plumping skin. Zyderm and Zyplast, for example, are promoted as premium collagen from cattle, “a soft tissue dermal filler made from purified cow skin used to fill wrinkles, lines and scars on the face.” If these factories ever process contaminated material, all future supplies will become contaminated. Since we don’t test cattle comprehensively for prion disease, it’s impossible to quantify the risk factor. It’s also impossible to eliminate that risk factor from the law of probabilities.

Some ingredient code words to watch for on soaps, cleansers, skin lotions, shampoos, conditioners and other personal care products include, stearic acid, myristic, lauric, oleic, palmitic acids, collagen and glycerin. Some of the safest products are made by Alba Botanical, Dr. Bronner’s and NOW Foods. Skin is the body’s largest living, breathing organ. What we feed our skin and scalp gets absorbed directly into the body. The proximity of the brain to our scalps, faces, eyes, lips and mouth, demands scrutiny of the chemicals that we pour on our heads and shoulders. When in doubt, make homemade lotions with ingredients that you know and trust. Several recipes are available online.

Making Natural Body Lotion Is Good For Your Health, Wallet

Natural Skin Care Products Easy To Make

Lotion is a top offender for beauty products. The skin is the biggest organ in the body, and many chemicals can be absorbed by the skin and stored in fat tissue. If you’re tired of all the chemicals and fragrances added to most store-bought creams and lotions, consider making your own—it isn’t difficult.

Natural Substitutes: The best natural lotion I have found so far is just pure organic Coconut Oil. It is able to penetrate the skin and the medium chain fatty acids help with wrinkles, dry skin, and other skin problems and since it is naturally antibacterial, it won’t cause breakouts. There are also countless ways to combine coconut oil with other oils, butters, essential oils and herbs to create solutions for your specific skin. I frequently make my own and give them as gifts to friends and family members who seem to love them.

If you can, I recommend that you keep an old blender, a small- to medium-size glass bowl, and a spatula that you use solely for making natural aromatherapy products. While you can use your kitchen blender, the beeswax found in natural creams can leave a residue on the blender and utensils used. Here’s what you’ll need:

3/4 cup of pure oil (I like sweet almond oil since it absorbs well and doesn’t leave a greasy film.
1 cup of pure water (or use rose water)
2 Tablespoons of shaved beeswax (be sure to avoid other types of wax since they are made of petroleum byproducts)
30 drops of essential oils (like lavender, ylang ylang, bergamot, or other oil. Make sure you avoid “fragrance oil” since it is synthetic. Lavender is a great one to start with since it is aromatic but also soothes sunburns, other types of burns, and is healing for most skin types).
a glass jar or small glass jars for storing the lotion

Making The Lotion: Pour the oil into a Pyrex measuring cup and add the shaved beeswax. Set it in a saucepan of water that reaches about halfway up the side of the Pyrex container. Heat over the stove until the beeswax dissolves and remove from the stove immediately. Allow to cool for a minute or two but not longer than that since the beeswax will begin to harden.

Pour the water into your blender and begin blending it on high speed with the lid on (with a hole left in the lid for pouring the beeswax-oil mixture). Slowly pour the oil-beeswax mixture into the water. It will begin to emulsify as you continue pouring the oil. It normally begins to thicken after about three-quarters of the oil has been incorporated. Continue adding the oil until you’ve incorporated all of it into the water.

Add the drops of essential oils you’ve selected. Blend them into the lotion. Pour the lotion into the glass jars you’ve selected for storing the cream. Use the spatula to remove any remaining lotion from the blender. The lotion lasts for about 6 months and is best kept at cool temperatures to prolong shelf life. You can store it in the fridge if you choose to keep it fresh.
