Expert Advice On Treating Dry Skin

When it comes to preventing dry skin, many skin care experts rave about moisturizers with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), originally derived from milk, fruit, or sugarcane. Alpha hydroxy acids are a group of natural acids found in foods. Alpha hydroxy acids include citric acid (found in citrus fruits), glycolic acid (found in sugar cane), lactic acid(found in sour milk), malic acid (found in apples), tartaric acid (found in grapes), and others. Various alpha hydroxy acids are applied to the skin (used topically) for moisturizing and removing dead skin cells, for treating acne and improving the appearance of acne scars, for improving the appearance of photo-aged skin, and firming and smoothing skin.

Alpha hydroxy acids are also used topically to treat extremely dry skin, an inherited disease marked by dry, scaly skin, and a condition that causes darkening of the skin. Alpha hydroxy acids seem to work by removing the top layers of dead skin cells. They can also increase the thickness of deeper layers of skin, promoting firmness.

“They remove dry, dead, crusty, scaly skin, and they trap moisture in your skin,” says Joan Kesman, owner of Skin Care Plus in geneva, Illinois.
“Some over-the-counter AHA products are better than others.”

“There’s so much that women can do for dry skin,” Kesman said. “A new generation of moisturizers and skin products are available to help dry skin.”

More Tips On Treating Dry Skin

Milk. If your itchy winter dry skin is driving you crazy, pour milk into a bowl. Dip a washcloth or a piece of gauze in the cold milk, and apply it to your skin for five minutes. “Milk has anti-inflammatory properties that often take the itch away. Some milk contains lactic acid, which is beneficial to skin.

Grease. Watery, scented lotions are useless on dry skin. Use strong, thick creams or emollients.

Moisturize. The best time of all to oil or cream your face and body is after a bath or shower, while you’re still damp and your skin is plump with moisture. Moisturizing lotions are formulated to lock in moisture so that it doesn’t evaporate. First, soak in a lukewarm tub. Get out of the tub and pat yourself semi-dry, then apply a layer of oil. Leave it on overnight if possible. Often, the very driest of skin occurs on your heels, hands, and elbows. Seal them with grease, too.
