Is Your Sunscreen Toxic??

 Is Your Sunscreen Toxic

The sun is out and summer is here.  The last few days have been beautiful for getting out, but at the same time that sun causes damage to our skin and can age us faster.  Facial treatments will help prevent that by repairing, calming and hydrating the face slowing down the aging process.  The newest and best treatment I have is LED light therapy.  Just purchased a new one that has new technology to further enhance your skin.  Check for info below and call for your appointment now.

Yes, we do need that sun that helps your body create Vitamin D.  It is recommended that you sit in the sun for about 15 to 45 minutes depending on how light or dark you are to get your needed dose.  Many ailments we have can be from a lack of this supplement.  Some experts believe that excessive use of sunscreen is also the cause of Vitamin D deficiency.

I, personally, do not use sunscreens.  I had a bad experience with it years ago when it became popular.  It burned my face.  I was on the golf course and used my water bottle to wash it off and still had to wash it off more at the nearest restroom.  I do take precautions with the sun.  My main to go product is Pevonia’s Vitamin C Complex for my face, to help prevent sun damage.  Using Vitamin C Complex at night helps to reverse  sun damage.  If I am going to be out for quite awhile, I take a powerful antioxidant Bio Astin Hawaiian Astaxanthin 12 mg before going into the sun, to help prevent sunburn.  When I’m out at my grandson’s baseball games, I further protect myself by wearing clothing that covers me more, wear sunglasses, and sit under trees when they are around.

Most sunscreens have toxic synthetic chemicals that are irritating to the skin such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, benzophenones, octyl methoxycinnamate, and more.  These ingredients can increase your risk of skin cancer and because of the irritation factor, it does increase aging of the skin.  Remember the Scientific Rule which states: The more you irritate the skin, the more it becomes inflamed, the faster you age, and the more you are prone to skin cancer.  It’s also recommended that you DO NOT use spray sunscreens because of the risk to your lungs. If you burn easily, you might need to use a sunscreen.  Look for a zinc oxide or titanium dioxide based formula that acts as a physical barrier. They just sit on the surface of the skin.  There is much controversy about using non-nanotech or nanotech formulas.  You choose.  A safe one that I use and my family uses is Dr. Mercola SPF 50 sunscreen.  Can be purchased on his website.  mercola.com

Best and Worst Sunscreens

This is my new LED light therapy unit.  Phototherapy is known for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties.  It can increase circulation, accelerate tissue repair, decrease wrinkles, improve texture, tone, and clarity, ease muscle and joint pain, stiffness, and spasms and kill acne bacteria and much more.  Also helps with rosacea and redness.  So with the summer sun, if you get sunburn the LED light therapy can help to heal that faster.

Are Your Skin Care Products Safe And Effective

Beware Of Toxic Ingredients In Skin Care Products

Pevonia Caviar Line

Clients ask me to check out their skin care products to see if they are safe and effective. I follow the Scientific Rule: The more you irritate the skin, the more it becomes inflamed, the faster you age and the more you are prone to skin cancer. By looking at the ingredient label, I am able to tell if they are safe or not but not really tell if they are effective. To check to see if the product is safe, I look to see what ingredients are irritants and possible or known carcinogens. One such ingredient, Triclosan, an antibacterial, was found to cause cancer in mice, so it is a possible carcinogenic for us. It can be found in skin care products, toothpastes, deodorant and more. This ingredient was questionable in the late 1990s and was taken out of the Pevonia products that I carry in less than a year. Yet many skin care companies still contain it.

The products’ effectiveness can’t be told by the ingredients list. You really need to know your company and the testing they do. Two things that are important to know: the percentage of the active ingredients in the product and if there is a special delivery system to help the ingredients to do their work. The active ingredients such as peptides, stem cells, and vitamin C, etc. need to have a certain percentage in the product to be beneficial. Also an ingredient like vitamin C needs a special manufacturing process to be beneficial in your bottle and effective.

It’s not easy for you tell if the product is going to be effective. That’s where your facial specialist comes in to help. I had researched many companies before I chose the Pevonia line. So according to your skin’s needs, I can let you know what products would help your skin to be healthier and younger looking.

The more you irritate the skin, the more it becomes inflamed, the faster you age and the more you are prone to skin cancer. If you have questions about your products, just call me. I would be glad to help and recommend.

Anti-Aging Skin Care Products

Skin Care Product Guide

Shopping for an anti-aging skin care products is a challenge. It can be difficult to know which skin care are best. These tips can help you shop with confidence.

Sunscreen and Moisturizer: Dermatologists agree that sunscreen and moisturizer are the two most-effective anti-aging products you can buy. Using these every day can make a noticeable difference. Sun protection helps to reduce signs of premature aging on your skin. It also allows your skin to repair and renew itself and reduces your risk for getting skin cancer. When shopping for sunscreen, select one that offers the following qualities:

  • Broad spectrum
  • SPF 30 (or higher)
  • Water resistance

An anti-aging moisturizer helps to minimize fine lines. It is so effective that moisturizer is the secret ingredient in many anti-aging products. Using a moisturizer with sunscreen is fine. Just be sure that the product offers broad-spectrum coverage and an SPF of 30 or higher. If you will spend time outdoors during the day, you should apply a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 (or higher), and water resistance. Be sure to reapply your sunscreen every two hours while outdoors.

Treat Your Top Skin Care Concern: Give sunscreen and moisturizer a few weeks to work. Then look at your skin. Is there still a sign of aging that bothers you?
Using several anti-aging products at the same time can irritate your skin. When you irritate your skin, signs of aging become more noticeable. By focusing on one concern, such as wrinkles or dark spots, you’ll get the best results. Look for a product that targets your concern. There are two reasons for this:

  • No product can treat all signs of skin aging.
  • Using more than one anti-aging product in a few days or weeks can irritate the skin, making you look older.

Buy Skin Care Products For Your Skin Type: Your sunscreen, moisturizer, and other anti-aging skin care products will work best if they are formulated for your skin type. If your skin tends to be oily, select a moisturizer made for oily skin. If you have sensitive skin, look for “sensitive skin” on the label. This is important because no one product works for everyone. Be sure to give products time to work. A moisturizer can plump up fine lines in a few days, but most products take at least 6 weeks to work. Sometimes it can take up to 3 months. Be patient and give the product time time to work. Be sure to continue using your skin care products, if you want to continue seeing results. People often stop using a skin care products once they see results.

Select Skin Care Products That Offer The Following Ingredients:

  • Hypoallergenic (The product can still cause an allergic reaction, but there is less risk);
  • Non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic (does not cause acne);
  • Natural ingredients (that you could actually eat); and
  • Consumer hotline (for questions).

Even hypoallergenic products can cause a skin reaction, so test them before applying them to your face. Apply a small amount to your inner forearm. Repeat this twice a day for 4 to 5 days. If your skin looks normal — free of redness, itch, and other reactions — you can apply it to your face and other skin. Stop using skin care products that sting, burn, or tingle. These sensations mean that the product irritates your skin. Irritated skin looks older. If you are using a product prescribed by your dermatologist, ask if this should be happening before you stop using it. Some prescription-strength products will burn or sting. Some products contain active ingredients that can cause problems if you apply more than directed. You could end up with clogged pores, blotchy skin, or excessively dry skin. Read the instructions, and use as directed.

Have Realistic Expectations: Exaggerated promises, such as look 10 years younger overnight or quickly reduces all signs of aging, are too good to be true. It’s important to remember that anti-aging skin care products deliver modest results. You cannot get the results of a facelift from a cream. “Clinically proven” means that the product was given to consumers to try. It does not mean the product underwent clinical trials and received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Select Products Within Your Price Range: It’s human nature to think that the more expensive the product, the better the results. Effective anti-aging products come in all price ranges.

The Difference Between Hydrating and Moisturizing Your Skin

Skincare Tips Promote Anti-Aging

Editor’s Note: The following article explains the difference between adding water to the skin (hydrating) and using a barrier on the skin (moisturizing). Toners are more for skin balancing and helping product to absorb better.  They do have hydrating qualities depending on the ingredients but serums are the very best products for hydrating.  Pevonia has safe and effective hydrating serums such as Timeless Repair Serum with caviar and pearl extract, Elastin Intensifier, and Collagen Intensifier.

I keep getting inquiries as the difference between moisturizing and hydrating. It’s an interesting question since both words are often used interchangeably, and it would seem they are the same. But are they? Well, not really. You see hydrating products are formulated to increase water content to plump up the skin while moisturizing products keep the skin soft and pliable by preventing water content in the skin from evaporating. But I thought I’ll discuss a little more here and to begin, let’s look at what exactly is moisturizing and hydrating.

Pevonia Caviar Line

Moisturizing makes skin soft and smooth. Moisturizing aims to form a barrier film on the skin’s surface to prevent moisture loss. This makes the skin feel softer and smoother. Moisturizers generally work in two ways with two types of ingredients. First, you have the humectants, such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, sorbitol, propylene glycol, lactic acid, and colloidal oatmeal, which work by attracting water molecules to the skin. And second are emollients, like sweet almond oil, apricot oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter, which work by softening skin and forming a protective layer on top, to prevent water loss by coating the skin with an oil-based substance to trap moisture in. Generally, the drier your skin, the thicker the moisturizer you need as they can help banish dry patches, flakiness and even fine lines. And in theory, a moisturizer should protect your skin from water loss until you wash your face but we know this does not always happen for various reasons, one of which is environmental pollution.
Hydrating makes skin plump and supple.
The upper layers on the epidermis needs a supply of water to make sure they are kept plump and smooth. Hence, hydrating facial products are designed for this purpose to increase the water content of the skin. They usually contain occlusive agents that keep moisture from leaving the skin and humectants that attract more moisture to the skin. So in a sense, hydrating products are often said to be moisturizing as well. However, to me, hydrating means the actual replenishment of moisture or water to skin cells. Therefore, you should replenish moisture to your skin first before you have your moisturizing skincare products applied.

Your skin needs to be hydrated and moisturized.
Going by the structure of our skin, we need both hydrating and moisturizing products applied on our skin. However, does this necessarily mean you need to apply two different products? Well, not so because many moisturizers these days are designed to be water-based, containing mostly water-binding ingredients such as hyaluronic acid with some oil. But say if your skin is very dry, it would be better to use two products, such as a hydrating toner or hydrating serum followed by a richer moisturizer.

Skincare Tip: Apply moisturizer to increase hydrating benefits.
Personally, I only use a hydrating toner prior to using my facial oil and moisturizer. I always ensure that I apply the products while my skin is still damp. You might like to know that applying moisturizer to a damp face helps to lock in the water from the upper layers of the skin, and prevents evaporation. The moisturizer will also help seal the hydrating benefits from the toner deep into the skin.

Foods That Promote Healthy Skin

Beat Dryness, Wrinkles With Nutrition

Give your topical creams some backup, and care for your face naturally. Nutritionist Dana James shared the good things to eat for a flawless complexion.

Papayas: They contain lots of vitamin C and serve as an exfoliant when applied topically. You will see several skincare products that contain papaya because of its numerous benefits to your skin.

natural skin care products

Avocados: A good source of biotin, avocados help to prevent dry skin and brittle hair and nails. When applied topically, they can hydrate parched skin. Create a moisturizing mask. Pit the fruit, puree the pulp, and pat it on your face. The oil acts as an emollient. It also contains beneficial vitamin E.

Green Tea: High on the list of skin-friendly beverages thanks to its impressive storehouse of polyphenols. Aim for four cups throughout your day.

Tomatoes: A German study found that lycopene-rich tomato paste helped participants prevent sunburn when they combined it with olive oil, daily for ten weeks. Besides being a great source of the antioxidant lycopene, tomatoes are considered a high-carotenoid fruit. These nutrients may help slow down cellular damage from free radicals.

Salmon: Salmon contains astaxanthin, a carotenoid that improves skin elasticity, so you’ll have fewer fine lines.

Eggs. Protein helps repair cells that have suffered free radical damage. Eggs, a complete source of protein, also contain biotin, an essential vitamin that protects against dry skin.

Pomegranates: When applied topically, this antioxidant-rich fruit may help skin create more collagen, while speeding healing.

Walnuts: Looking to add Omega-3 fatty acids to your diet but not a fan of fish? Walnuts are a rich source of Omega-3s, which help put shine in your hair and aid in making skin smoother and younger looking.

Beans: Another protein source, legumes help repair cells that have suffered free radical damage. During digestion, protein breaks down into amino acids, the building blocks of cells. Amino acids help to speed the repair and regeneration of skin cells and collagen.

Skin Care Expert Emphasizes Hydration

Hydration Helps Avoid Wrinkled Skin

Drinking plenty of water daily is important for overall good health. But what about drinking large amounts of water for proper skin health? Water gives your skin a radiant, healthy, younger- looking complexion, while others say it has no effect on skin’s appearance whatsoever. I say, water helps hydrate and detox, so indulge.

The fact is that skin is an organ, and just like any other part of the body. your skin is made up of cells. And skin cells, like any other cell in the body, are made up of water. Without water, the organs will certainly not function properly or at their best.

Geneva skin care and facial

If your skin is not getting the sufficient amount of water, the lack of hydration will present itself by turning your skin dry, tight and flaky. Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling. Skin is made up of three layers — the outer layer (epidermis), the underlying skin (dermis) and the subcutaneous fat tissue. If the outermost layer of the epidermis doesn’t contain enough water, skin will lose elasticity and feel rough.

As water is lost in large quantities every day, you need to replace it somehow. The unfortunate truth about drinking water and skin is that water will reach all the other organs before it reaches the skin. I advise clients to apply a hydrating moisturizer within immediately after leaving the bath or shower. The skin is still porous and open to better absorption than after you cool down.

Of course, part of the equation is to drink more water. Drinking at least 8 glasses a day will help rid the body and skin of toxins. Everyone will not agree that water consumption will improve skin health, but it can’t hurt. Many people often report that by increasing their water intake, their skin has a more radiant glow. Those who suffer from acne have reported the same results.

Other Tips For Dry Skin:

  • Avoid exposure to dry air
  • Avoid prolonged contact with hot or chlorinated water
  • Use a gentle cleanser instead of soap
  • Avoid using skin care products that contain alcohol
  • Minimize dehydrating fluids with alcohol and caffeine
  • Moisturize immediately after a bath or shower and regularly throughout the day
  • Use a humidifier
  • Wear a scarf and gloves when going out in cold weather

Of course, all moisturizers are not created equal. We carry a few products that we recommend highly because they are natural and effective. Just give us a call and we can discuss your needs and make a better recommendation to prevent and treat your dry skin.

Skin Types Demand Different Care

Personal Skin Care Starts With Analysis

Vibrant, beautiful skin has always been considered an important part of health. But in today’s modern environment, soft, smooth, flawless skin can be difficult to achieve and even more challenging to maintain. Your skin’s health is largely determined by diet, lifestyle habits, and sun exposure, which can sabotage healthy skin and leave lasting effects on skin strength, resiliency, and appearance.

In the early 1900s, four different skin types; dry, oily, combination, and sensitive, were identified and characterized by Helena Rubinstein. Each of those skin types is characterized by its own features and specifications such as:

Dry Skin (Xerosis)
This skin type is characterized by a dull gray-white color, rough texture, and an elevated number of ridges. The oily secretion of the sebaceous glands, which contains wax esters, sterol esters, cholesterol, di- and triglycerides, and squalene is believed to protect the skin from environmental influences and, when production is lower, contribute to dry skin. When the body’s natural oily layer on the skin dries out, the skin is unable to produce enough oil and moisture for the body to replenish the amount being lost. For the most part, the skin is able to replace that which is lost, but sometimes the body’s efforts are not enough and the skin needs more protection.

Oily skin
Sometimes also known as acne prone skin, Oily skin is particularly common in adolescents and young adults. At this age there is a dramatic increase in sebum production under the influence of the hormones. Oily skin is characterized by the abundance and nature of the sebum excreted at the skin surface by the sebaceous gland, target organ of androgens. It is most frequently encountered in adolescents and young adults. Excess of sebum gives the skin a shiny appearance, particularly on the forehead, the sides of the nose and the chin. In severe cases, various forms of acne can develop. An oily skin is also thick, well moisturized and covered with a protective oily film.

Sensitive skin
Sensitive skin is more common, with more than 40% of people claiming to have such skin. Sensitive skin is generally considered as skin which is easily irritated and probably has a genetic element. Some people with this condition cannot tolerate contact with any cosmetic products, however well-formulated they may be. Sensitive skin can be associated with a medical condition called atopy, where people have an inherited predisposition to eczema, hay fever and asthma. About 15-20% of the population has the genetic ability to develop eczema, asthma and hay fever.

Combination skin
Also known as “mixed” type of skin, this skin form is considered variable when exposed to different external and internal factors such as weather, climate, medicines intake, diet consumption etc.

Change Your Thoughts To Change Your Life

Inner Peace Promotes Wellness

The world is going through chaotic changes right now, changes that need to happen since we are in the age of peace, the age of Aquarius. That peace starts with us and our thoughts and beliefs. Is your mind cluttered with fears and anger, a lot of negative beliefs? What you think, affects how you feel physically, mentally, and spiritually. Your fear-based and limiting negative thoughts, can actually cause illness in the body and mind.  Science now knows there is a mind/body connection.

A great book to read about this is “The Biology Of Belief” by Bruce Lipton, Ph.D. A quote of his from the book—“Beliefs and thoughts alter cells in your body”. And how do we change our thoughts and beliefs? For a long time it was thought that just thinking and expressing positive affirmations would change all that. It might help some but not enough. A quote again from Bruce Lipton, Ph.D. that explains it best.

Geneva skin care and facial

“Our thoughts are mainly controlled by our subconscious, which is largely formed before the age of 6, and you cannot change the subconscious mind by just thinking about it. That’s why the power of positive thinking will not work for most people. The subconscious mind is like a tape player. Until you change the tape, it will not change.”

According to Dr. Bruce Lipton, the fastest and easiest way to change the subconscious is using Psych-K techniques.  This psychological process helps you to communicate directly with your subconscious mind so you can discover your programmed hidden beliefs that could be sabotaging your peace and success.  Psych-K is whole brain integration, a way to work with the conscious and subconscious together.  Studies indicate that 95% of our consciousness is actually in the subconscious. To learn more about Psych-K and the founder Robert Williams, M.A, check out this you tube link.  visit Psych-K

I have taken the classes and used the Psych-K modalities for years now and have undergone a lot
of changes for the better. It helped me to let go of many of my struggles. I feel peaceful and calm
because of it. It’s a technique that I highly recommend to change those self-sabotaging beliefs thus
changing your life. Please give me a call and I will tell you more.

Facial Serums Make A Difference

Serums, Cleansers Critical To Healthy Skin

skin care products natural

In the past, I’ve talked about skin cleansers and toners. Cleansers are probably the most important product to use on your skin. If they are too acidic or too alkaline, they tear down the skin, making it irritated and more sensitive. Scrubs can cause the same type of skin damage.

The more you irritate the skin, the more it becomes inflamed, the faster you age and the more you are prone to skin  cancer.

Your skin is a complex organ that serves as a protective barrier. It’s aging not only affects how old you look, but the thinning of the skin exposes you to infections and environmental chemicals and UV radiation.  So you need to know your cleanser. (You can bring it in and I can check it out for you. Know too, that Pevonia’s cleansers are the proper PH.)

Step #2 is skin toner. Toners balance the skin and they also remove tap residue. Depending on your water supply, this residue can cause breakout and problems on the skin.

skin care Geneva

On to the third step in your home care routine which is a serum, (also called intensifiers, concentrates, elixirs, and boosters). Clients ask me if they really need a serum. The answer is YES.  The appropriate serum can make a dramatic difference on your face. It can make your skin look and feel younger, help tighten pores, calm redness, hydrate, diminish wrinkles, help acne, lighten, and more.  The best thing about specialized serums, is that they have powerful, concentrated, active ingredients that absorb quickly to deliver these ingredients.  The gel-like product is usually water based so it doesn’t clog your pores.

When you want to target specific skin concerns, serums are the way to go. Not only do they offer targeted results, but they strengthen your cells and give them nourishment and help repair. The one serum I like best, especially in the sun, is Vitamin C Concentrate by Pevonia. It helps prevent and repair sun damage.

These concentrates need to go on immediately after cleansing and toning. The skin needs to be very moist for the serum to be massaged gently (up and out movements) into the skin of the face, neck, and upper chest. If you don’t have toner, then leave your face moist with water (distilled water if possible). A creamy lotion or cream moisturizer over the top is usually recommended to keep serum from evaporating before it delivers its targeted ingredient.

Whatever your skin care concerns are, you can see faster results using the appropriate serum. Not all serums are created equal since manufacturing practices vary from brand to brand. Pevonia has my serums of choice because they are safe and effective.

Protect Your Skin From Melanoma

Screen For Skin Cancer On Melanoma Monday

Melanoma is not the most common form of skin cancer, but it is the deadliest. One in 50 Americans will develop malignant melanoma and around 10,000 people will die from it this year. And it’s not just a disease that affects the elderly. In fact, melanoma is the most common form of skin cancer in young adults between the ages of 25 and 29.

The back is the most common site for malignant melanoma. It’s hard for us to detect since we can’t see areas near the spine and shoulder blades as well as other parts of our body. It’s also difficult to cover that area with sunscreen without asking for help. As such, melanoma on the back is typically diagnosed later, which makes treatment more challenging.

natural skin care Chicago

Skin cancer is an abnormal growth of skin cells. It most often develops on areas of the skin exposed to the sun’s rays. Skin cancer affects people of all colors and races, although those with light skin who sunburn easily have a higher risk.

What Does Skin Cancer Look Like

Actinic Keratoses (AK). These dry, scaly patches or spots are precancerous growths.

types-of-skin-cancer-actinic-keratoses.jpg

  • People who get AKs usually have fair skin.
  • Most people see their first AKs after 40 years of age because AKs tend to develop after years of sun exposure.
  • AKs usually form on the skin that gets lots of sun exposure, such as the head, neck, hands, and forearms.
  • Because an AK can progress to a type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), treatment is important.

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC). This is the most common type of skin cancer.
types-of-skin-cancer-basal-cell-carcinoma.jpg

  • BCCs frequently develop in people who have fair skin, yet they can occur in people with darker skin.
  • BCCs look like a flesh-colored, pearl-like bump or a pinkish patch of skin.
  • BCCs develop after years of frequent sun exposure or indoor tanning.
  • BCC are common on the head, neck, and arms, yet can form anywhere on the body, including the chest, abdomen, and legs.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment for BCC is important. BCC can invade the surrounding tissue and grow into the nerves and bones, causing damage and disfigurement.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). SCC is the second most common type of skin cancer.

types-of-skin-cancer-squamous-cell-carcinoma.jpg

  • People who have light skin are most likely to develop SCC, yet they can develop in darker-skinned people.
  • SCC often looks like a red firm bump, scaly patch, or a sore that heals and then re-opens.
  • SCC tend to form on skin that gets frequent sun exposure, such as the rim of the ear, face, neck, arms, chest, and back. SCC can grow deep in the skin and cause damage and disfigurement. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent this and stop SCC from spreading to other areas of the body.

Melanoma. The deadliest form of skin cancer.
types-of-skin-cancer-melanoma.jpg

  • Melanoma frequently develops in a mole or suddenly appears as a new dark spot on the skin.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial.
  • Knowing the warning signs of melanoma can help you with early detection.
