 Yes, we do need that sun that helps your body create Vitamin D.  It is recommended that you sit in the sun for about 15 to 45 minutes depending on how light or dark you are to get your needed dose.  Many ailments we have can be from a lack of this supplement.  Some experts believe that excessive use of sunscreen is also the cause of Vitamin D deficiency.

I, personally, do not use sunscreens.  I had a bad experience with it years ago when it became popular.  It burned my face.  I was on the golf course and used my water bottle to wash it off and still had to wash it off more at the nearest restroom.  I do take precautions with the sun.  My main to go product is Pevonia’s Vitamin C Complex for my face, to help prevent sun damage.  Using Vitamin C Complex at night helps to reverse  sun damage.  If I am going to be out for quite awhile, I take a powerful antioxidant Bio Astin Hawaiian Astaxanthin 12 mg before going into the sun, to help prevent sunburn.  When I’m out at my grandson’s baseball games, I further protect myself by wearing clothing that covers me more, wear sunglasses, and sit under trees when they are around.

Most sunscreens have toxic synthetic chemicals that are irritating to the skin such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, benzophenones,octyl methoxycinnamate, and more.  These ingredients can increase your risk of skin cancer and because of the irritation factor, it does increase aging of the skin.  Remember the Scientific Rule which states: The more you irritate the skin, the more it becomes inflamed, the faster you age, and the more you are prone to skin cancer.  It’s also recommended that you DO NOT use spray sunscreens because of the risk to your lungs.If you burn easily, you might need to use a sunscreen.  Look for a zinc oxide or titanium dioxide based formula that acts as a physical barrier. They just sit on the surface of the skin.  There is much controversy about using non-nanotech or nanotech formulas.  You choose.  A safe one that I use and my family uses is Dr. Mercola SPF 50 sunscreen.  Can be purchased on his website.

Clients ask me to check out their skin care products to see if they are safe and effective. I follow the Scientific Rule: The more you irritate the skin, the more it becomes inflamed, the faster you age and the more you are prone to skin cancer. By looking at the ingredient label, I am able to tell if they are safe or not but not really tell if they are effective. To check to see if the product is safe, I look to see what ingredients are irritants and possible or known carcinogens. One such ingredient, Triclosan, an antibacterial, was found to cause cancer in mice, so it is a possible carcinogenic for us. It can be found in skin care products, toothpastes, deodorant and more. This ingredient was questionable in the late 1990s and was taken out of the Pevonia products that I carry in less than a year. Yet many skin care companies still contain it.

The products’ effectiveness can’t be told by the ingredients list. You really need to know your company and the testing they do. Two things that are important to know: the percentage of the active ingredients in the product and if there is a special delivery system to help the ingredients to do their work.The active ingredients such as peptides, stem cells, and vitamin C, etc. need to have a certain percentage in the product to be beneficial. Also an ingredient like vitamin C needs a special manufacturing process to be beneficial in your bottle and effective.

It’s not easy for you tell if the product is going to be effective. That’s where your facial specialist comes in to help. I had researched many companies before I chose the Pevonia line. So according to your skin’s needs, I can let you know what products would help your skin to be healthier and younger looking.

Using several anti-aging products at the same time can irritate your skin. Even hypoallergenic products can cause a skin reaction, so test them before applying them to your face. Apply a small amount to your inner forearm. Repeat this twice a day for 4 to 5 days. If your skin looks normal — free of redness, itch, and other reactions — you can apply it to your face and other skin. Stop using skin care products that sting, burn, or tingle. These sensations mean that the product irritates your skin. Irritated skin looks older. If you are using a product prescribed by your dermatologist, ask if this should be happening before you stop using it. Some prescription-strength products will burn or sting. Some products contain active ingredients that can cause problems if you apply more than directed. You could end up with clogged pores, blotchy skin, or excessively dry skin. Read the instructions, and use as directed.

Have Realistic Expectations: Exaggerated promises, such as look 10 years younger overnight or quickly reduces all signs of aging, are too good to be true. It’s important to remember that anti-aging skin care products deliver modest results. You cannot get the results of a facelift from a cream. “Clinically proven” means that the product was given to consumers to try. It does not mean the product underwent clinical trials and received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Select Products Within Your Price Range: It’s human nature to think that the more expensive the product, the better the results. Effective anti-aging products come in all price ranges.

I keep getting inquiries as the difference between moisturizing and hydrating. It’s an interesting question since both words are often used interchangeably, and it would seem they are the same. But are they? Well, not really. You see hydrating products are formulated to increase water content to plump up the skin while moisturizing products keep the skin soft and pliable by preventing water content in the skin from evaporating. But I thought I’ll discuss a little more here and to begin, let’s look at what exactly is moisturizing and hydrating.

Moisturizing makes skin soft and smooth. Moisturizing aims to form a barrier film on the skin’s surface to prevent moisture loss. This makes the skin feel softer and smoother. Moisturizers generally work in two ways with two types of ingredients. First, you have the humectants, such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, sorbitol, propylene glycol, lactic acid, and colloidal oatmeal, which work by attracting water molecules to the skin. And second are emollients, like sweet almond oil, apricot oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter, which work by softening skin and forming a protective layer on top, to prevent water loss by coating the skin with an oil-based substance to trap moisture in. Generally, the drier your skin, the thicker the moisturizer you need as they can help banish dry patches, flakiness and even fine lines. And in theory, a moisturizer should protect your skin from water loss until you wash your face but we know this does not always happen for various reasons, one of which is environmental pollution.
Hydrating makes skin plump and supple.
The upper layers on the epidermis needs a supply of water to make sure they are kept plump and smooth. Hence, hydrating facial products are designed for this purpose to increase the water content of the skin. They usually contain occlusive agents that keep moisture from leaving the skin and humectants that attract more moisture to the skin. So in a sense, hydrating products are often said to be moisturizing as well. However, to me, hydrating means the actual replenishment of moisture or water to skin cells. Therefore, you should replenish moisture to your skin first before you have your moisturizing skincare products applied.

Your skin needs to be hydrated and moisturized.
Going by the structure of our skin, we need both hydrating and moisturizing products applied on our skin. However, does this necessarily mean you need to apply two different products? Well, not so because many moisturizers these days are designed to be water-based, containing mostly water-binding ingredients such as hyaluronic acid with some oil. But say if your skin is very dry, it would be better to use two products, such as a hydrating toner or hydrating serum followed by a richer moisturizer.

Skincare Tip: Apply moisturizer to increase hydrating benefits.
Personally, I only use a hydrating toner prior to using my facial oil and moisturizer. I always ensure that I apply the products while my skin is still damp. You might like to know that applying moisturizer to a damp face helps to lock in the water from the upper layers of the skin, and prevents evaporation. The moisturizer will also help seal the hydrating benefits from the toner deep into the skin.

Facial Serums Make A Difference

In the past, I’ve talked about skin cleansers and toners. Cleansers are probably the most important product to use on your skin. If they are too acidic or too alkaline, they tear down the skin, making it irritated and more sensitive. Scrubs can cause the same type of skin damage.

The more you irritate the skin, the more it becomes inflamed, the faster you age and the more you are prone to skin  cancer.

Your skin is a complex organ that serves as a protective barrier. It’s aging not only affects how old you look, but the thinning of the skin exposes you to infections and environmental chemicals and UV radiation.  So you need to know your cleanser. (You can bring it in and I can check it out for you. Know too, that Pevonia’s cleansers are the proper PH.)

Step #2 is skin toner. Toners balance the skin and they also remove tap residue. Depending on your water supply, this residue can cause breakout and problems on the skin.

On to the third step in your home care routine which is a serum, (also called intensifiers, concentrates, elixirs, and boosters). Clients ask me if they really need a serum. The answer is YES.  The appropriate serum can make a dramatic difference on your face. It can make your skin look and feel younger, help tighten pores, calm redness, hydrate, diminish wrinkles, help acne, lighten, and more.  The best thing about specialized serums, is that they have powerful, concentrated, active ingredients that absorb quickly to deliver these ingredients.  The gel-like product is usually water based so it doesn’t clog your pores.

When you want to target specific skin concerns, serums are the way to go. Not only do they offer targeted results, but they strengthen your cells and give them nourishment and help repair. The one serum I like best, especially in the sun, is Vitamin C Concentrate by Pevonia. It helps prevent and repair sun damage.

These concentrates need to go on immediately after cleansing and toning. The skin needs to be very moist for the serum to be massaged gently (up and out movements) into the skin of the face, neck, and upper chest. If you don’t have toner, then leave your face moist with water (distilled water if possible). A creamy lotion or cream moisturizer over the top is usually recommended to keep serum from evaporating before it delivers its targeted ingredient.

Foods That Build Collagen Can Prevent Wrinkled Skin

Collagen and elastin help keep your skin firm. You may develop sagging skin with age as your skin loses its natural elasticity. Intrinsic aging is a natural part of the aging process that reduces collagen and elastin production in your skin. Extrinsic factors such as repetitive facial expressions, sleeping positions, smoking and sun exposure can prematurely age your skin and lead to sagging. Extreme or rapid weight loss may also contribute to sagging skin. Physical activity can help by toning the muscles beneath your skin. Drink plenty of water, exfoliate and moisturize your skin to improve and prevent sagging.

While foods that build collagen and elastin are beneficial at any time of life, it becomes particularly important to get enough of these foods after age 50. At that point, your body begins producing less collagen and elastin, which can result in loss of elasticity and firmness in your skin and facial features.

Vitamin C: Your body uses vitamin C to make collagen and elastin, proteins which help keep your skin firm and supple. Vitamin C is an antioxidant and helps support your immune system, so you get both beauty and health benefits from foods rich in this vitamin. After age 50, you should concentrate on a variety of fruits and vegetables containing vitamin C. Citrus fruits — like oranges and grapefruits –red peppers, strawberries and sweet potatoes all contribute a significant amount to your vitamin C intake.

LysineLysine is an amino acid that your body uses to build collagen. It is an essential amino acid, which means that while your body needs it, your body cannot produce it by itself. Instead, it is provided exclusively by your diet. Red meats, cheese and nuts are all high in lysine, but they can also be high in fat. If you are over 50 and struggling with weight as well, try soy products, which are also high in lysine but lower in fat.

Manganese: Your body needs manganese to increase production of collagen and elastin, especially when healing wounds. If you are over 50 and have also had surgery that has left scarring, manganese will help your skin and help you heal. Your diet should provide a small amount of manganese — 2.3 milligrams for men and 1.8 milligrams for women. Eat foods like pineapple, pecans, whole grains and leafy greens, which are high in manganese. Unorthodox foods like seaweed and other sea vegetables are also high in manganese.

CopperYour body needs the essential mineral copper to knit together collagen and elastin to form strong skin. Copper, like manganese, is found in a wide variety of foods, although it is most concentrated in meat from animal organs, shellfish, nuts and seeds. Whole grain foods, like breads and pastas, are also high in the mineral. Copper is less frequently found in fruits and vegetables, but you can get reach your recommended daily intake by adding nuts and seeds — such as cashews, almonds and sunflower seeds — as well as lentils and mushrooms into your diet. Consume 0.9 milligram of copper daily for healthy collagen and elastin production.

Collagen is a type of protein, and works with keratin to provide the skin with strength, smoothness, elasticity and resilience. It is produced by the skin and other parts of the body. When you are young, you have an abundance of collagen in your body, which is why young children have such lovely shiny hair and smooth skin.

More foods that can help us generate collagen include:

Soy products  such as soymik and cheese contain an element known as genistein. The presence of genistein gives soy products their collagen production qualities, as well as helping to block enzymes that tend to break down and age the skin.  Just about any soy product contains enough genistein to be helpful, including soy products that have been developed as substitutes for meat products.

Dark green vegetables are also excellent examples of food containing collagen producing agents. Add drak green leafy veggies such as spinach, cabbage and kale to your diet every day. They are packed with an antioxidant called lutein. You need 10 mg to get results – which equates to about  4oz. of spinach or 2oz. of kale. Recent French research suggests this will boost skin hydration and elasticity, fighting wrinkles. Rich in Vitamin C,  regular consumption of kale, spinach,collards, and asparagus help to strengthen the body’s ability to manufacture collagen and to utilize the protein effectively.

Beans help your body produce a vital anti-aging substance called hyaluronic acid. Aim for at least two tablespoons of beans each day – broad or butter beans make a great substitute for mashed potatoes.

Red fruits and vegetables also are excellent sources to up the collagen content of foods in the diet.  The presence of lycopenesl in these types of foods helps to act as antioxidants, which in turn increases collagen production. Try adding red peppers, beets, and fresh or stewed tomatoes to the diet. Also include sweet potatoes, carrots and more.  Research from Dr Ronald Watson at the University of Arizona has found that the antioxidants in red, yellow and orange foods build up under the skin creating extra UV protection. “The effect is so strong that eating six portions a day for about two months will build a natural barrier equivalent to a factor four sunscreen,” says Dr Watson.

Vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables are natural  sources of collagen production.  You should try to include citrus fruits like oranges, lemons and strawberries into your daily diet.

Prunes  One of the biggest causes of skin aging is attack by substances called free radicals, that break down healthy skin tissues.  Antioxidants helps neutralize these free radicals before they can do any damage – and prunes are the fruit containing the absolute highest level of antioxidants. Blueberries are a close second. Eat five to six prunes, or a small basket of blueberries, daily to get a great health boost .

Omega Acids also help to create an ideal environment for collagen production. Fish such as salmon and tuna are excellent sources of omega fatty acids.  Nuts such as cashews, pecans, almonds and Brazil nuts contain healthy amounts as well.

Flaxseed is a major sources of the healthy fat omega-3. Skin cells are surrounded by a fatty layer made from this and other fats so, the higher your omega-3 intake the stronger that layer is, and the plumper your skin cells are – which helps disguise lines and wrinkles.  Mix it into smoothies or add it to balsamic vinegar and use it as a salad dressing, but try to have a tablespoon each day.

Foods that are rich in sulphur content are also important to collagen production. Among these are green and black olives, fresh cucumbers, and fresh stalks of celery. Working in conjunction with the sulphur, vegetables that are rich in Vitamin A also aid in keeping collagen levels high. Try adding raw carrots, fresh cantaloupe and baked sweet potatoes to the diet for an extra boost.

Turkey contains a vital skin-friendly protein called carnosine  that slows down a process in the skin called cross-linking. When this happens, fibres grow into the collagen of the skin making it stiff and inelastic. This then stops it snapping back when you do things like smile, laugh or frown – and this is what causes smile lines or crows feet.  Eat turkey two to three times a week.

Chocolate  is really is good for your skin. In studies in Germany, it was found that after drinking a cocoa-packed drink, blood flow to the skin was boosted (meaning it gets higher levels of nutrients and moisture). It also seemed to be more protected against UV damage – the number-one skin ager. Only dark chocolate contains enough antioxidants to have effects, though.

Manuka Honey is a special honey from New Zealand with unique healing properties. It has been used in skin care for centuries by the Maori people of New Zealand and it’s easy to understand why. When used topically, Active Manuka Honey can restore and rejuvenate your skin. It supports the skin cell renewal process and assists in the formation of stronger collagen protein. As an added benefit, active manuka honey is rich in antioxidants and helps to reduce blemishes.

Rose hips are one of the plants extract that can present a rich source of collagen. They  contain a high level of vitamin C, which is good for the production of collagen.

Avocado Oil  If you want to know how to naturally produce collagen, you need to use face masks or creams that contain avocado oil. Avocado oil is deeply hydrating and highly compatible with the natural oils in your skin. Avocado oil is high in plant steroids,  which help to reduce blemishes and age spots. It also helps to regenerate and rejuvenate skin damaged by free radicals. Avocado oil is important because it is scientifically proven to stimulate collagen production and it increases the proportion of soluble collagen in the dermis of your skin. And don’t forget to include fresh avocadoes in your favourite salad and soup recipes.

One of the key points to keep in mind is that it is possible to provide everything your body needs to produce collagen by eating a balanced diet. By including some of the foods mentioned here, you will soon begin to see a difference in the quality of your skin tone, as well as have an improved sense of overall health. So toss those  collagen creams out and start shopping for foods that will actually help you re-grow the collagen you have lost.

Most anti-wrinkle creams contain collagen and elastin, and won’t do anything for you, since that these two ingredients are too dense to enter our skin.

Skin Care Products Must Eliminate Microbeads

An outright ban on the common use of tiny plastic beads from products that enter wastewater is the best way to protect water quality, wildlife, and resources used by people, a group of conservation scientists suggest in a new analysis. It also can help protect your skin and overall health.

These microbeads are one part of the microplastic problem in oceans, freshwater lakes and rivers, but are a special concern because in many products they are literally designed to be flushed down the drain. And even at conservative estimates, the collective total of microbeads being produced today is enormous.

In an article just published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, scientists from seven institutions say that nontoxic and biodegradable alternatives exist for microbeads, which are used in hundreds of products as abrasive scrubbers, ranging from face washes, exfoliants to toothpaste. Around the size of a grain of sand, they can provide a gritty texture to products where that is needed.

“We’re facing a plastic crisis and don’t even know it,” said Stephanie Green, the David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellow in the College of Science at Oregon State University, and co-author of this report.

“Part of this problem can now start with brushing your teeth in the morning,” she said. “Contaminants like these microbeads are not something our wastewater treatment plants were built to handle, and the overall amount of contamination is huge. The microbeads are very durable.”

In this analysis, and using extremely conservative methodology, the researchers estimated that 8 trillion microbeads per day are being emitted into aquatic habitats in the United States – enough to cover more than 300 tennis courts a day. But the other 99 percent of the microbeads – another 800 trillion – end up in sludge from sewage plants, which is often spread over areas of land. Many of those microbeads can then make their way into streams and oceans through runoff.

“Microbeads are just one of many types of microplastic found in aquatic habitats and in the gut content of wildlife,” said Chelsea Rochman, the David H. Smith Conservation Research Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California/Davis, and lead author on the analysis.

“We’ve demonstrated in previous studies that microplastic of the same type, size and shape as many microbeads can transfer contaminants to animals and cause toxic effects,” Rochman said. “We argue that the scientific evidence regarding microplastic supports legislation calling for a removal of plastic microbeads from personal care products.”

Even though microbeads are just one part of the larger concern about plastic debris that end up in oceans and other aquatic habitat, they are also one of the most controllable. With growing awareness of this problem, a number of companies have committed to stop using microbeads in their cosmetics, shampoos, toothpastes and skin care products, and several states have already regulated or banned the products.

The researchers point out in their analysis, however, that some bans have included loopholes using strategic wording. Many microbeads are used in personal care products that are not “rinse off,” such as deodorants and cleaners. And some regulations use the term “biodegradable” to specify what products are allowed – but some microbeads can biodegrade just slightly, which may allow their continued use.

If legislation is sought, “new wording should ensure that a material that is persistent, bioaccumulative, or toxic is not added to products designed to go down the drain,” the researchers wrote in their report.

“The probability of risk from microbead pollution is high, while the solution to this problem is simple,” they concluded.

“For us it’s about giving people the right concentrations that their skin can metabolize,” said Christofer Toumazou, the company’s founder and a professor at Imperial College London. “We all know that science and technology have radically reshaped many aspects of our daily lives over the last 20 years. GENEU is at the forefront of the next wave of skin health. One that brings medical and technological expertise to everyone’s individual healthcare and beauty needs in radically new ways.”

Double-blind clinical trials over 18 months suggest that GeneU reduces fine lines and wrinkles by up to 30 percent in 12 weeks, Dr. Toumazou said. The results have not yet been published.

GeneU isn’t the only company offering skin care tailored to genetics. SkinShift in Austin, Tex., outsources its $99 DNA test, then suggests some combination drawn from an available pool of four serums and five nutritional supplements. None cost more than $75.

Avoid These Skin Care Ingredients

Labels on cosmetics and skin care products are a tough code to crack. The industry is so shockingly unregulated that it’s usually impossible to trust the claims that manufacturers place on their products. A word such as natural can be used by anyone for anything. Even organic is misleading. Companies are supposed to use an organic label only if all ingredients are certified-organic, but they can also say it’s “made with organic” if it contains a minimum of 70 percent certified-organic ingredients. Regardless, 30 percent still leaves a lot of room for toxins.

The whole industry has a “innocent-till-proven-guilty” approach to skin care products and their ingredients. Unless a chemical used in beauty products is proven to cause harm to human health, it is classified as GRAS, or “generally recognized as safe.” This classification is upheld by the U.S. FDA and hardly has the best interests of consumers at heart.

The best thing we consumers can do is read ingredient lists carefully in order to avoid chemicals that are known to be harmful, even though they continue to be widely used. Here is a list of the top 20 toxins to avoid, according to Gillian Deacon’s 2011 book There’s Lead in Your Lipstick: Toxins in Our Everyday Body Care and How to Avoid Them.

Coal Tar: A known carcinogen banned in the EU, but still used in North America. Used in dry skin treatments, anti-lice and anti-dandruff shampoos, also listed as a colour plus number, i.e. FD&C Red No. 6.

DEA/TEA/MEA: Suspected carcinogens used as emulsifiers and foaming agents for shampoos, body washes, soaps.

Ethoxylated surfactants and 1,4-dioxane: Never listed because it’s a by-product made from adding carcinogenic ethylene oxide to make other chemicals less harsh. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has found 1,4-dioxane in 57 percent of baby washes in the U.S. Avoid any ingredients containing the letters “eth.”

Formaldehyde: Probable carcinogen and irritant found in nail products, hair dye, fake eyelash adhesives, shampoos. Banned in the EU.

Fragrance/Parfum: A catchall for hidden chemicals, such as phthalates. Fragrance is connected to headaches, dizziness, asthma, and allergies.

Hydroquinone: Used for lightening skin. Banned in the UK, rated most toxic on the EWG’s Skin Deep database, and linked to cancer and reproductive toxicity.

Lead: Known carcinogen found in lipstick and hair dye, but never listed because it’s a contaminant, not an ingredient.

Mercury: Known allergen that impairs brain development. Found in mascara and some eyedrops.

Mineral oil: By-product of petroleum that’s used in baby oil, moisturizers, styling gels. It creates a film that impairs the skin’s ability to release toxins.

Oxybenzone: Active ingredient in chemical sunscreens that accumulates in fatty tissues and is linked to allergies, hormone disruption, cellular damage, low birth weight.

Parabens: Used as preservatives, found in many products. Linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity.

Paraphenylenediamine (PPD): Used in hair products and dyes, but toxic to skin and immune system.

Phthalates: Plasticizers banned in the EU and California in children’s toys, but present in many fragrances, perfumes, deodorants, lotions. Linked to endocrine disruption, liver/kidney/lung damage, cancer.

Placental extract: Used in some skin and hair products, but linked to endocrine disruption.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG): Penetration enhancer used in many products, it’s often contaminated with 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide, both known carcinogens.

Silicone-derived emollients: Used to make a product feel soft, these don’t biodegrade, and also prevent skin from breathing. Linked to tumour growth and skin irritation.

Sodium lauryl (ether) sulfate (SLS, SLES): A former industrial degreaser now used to make soap foamy, it’s absorbed into the body and irritates skin.

Talc: Similar to asbestos in composition, it’s found in baby powder, eye shadow, blush, deodorant. Linked to ovarian cancer and respiratory problems.

Toluene: Known to disrupt the immune and endocrine systems, and fetal development, it’s used in nail and hair products. Often hidden under fragrance.

Triclosan: Found in antibacterial products, hand sanitizers, and deodorants, it is linked to cancer and endocrine disruption. Avoid the brand Microban.
