The Difference Between Hydrating and Moisturizing Your Skin

Skincare Tips Promote Anti-Aging

Editor’s Note: The following article explains the difference between adding water to the skin (hydrating) and using a barrier on the skin (moisturizing). Toners are more for skin balancing and helping product to absorb better.  They do have hydrating qualities depending on the ingredients but serums are the very best products for hydrating.  Pevonia has safe and effective hydrating serums such as Timeless Repair Serum with caviar and pearl extract, Elastin Intensifier, and Collagen Intensifier.

I keep getting inquiries as the difference between moisturizing and hydrating. It’s an interesting question since both words are often used interchangeably, and it would seem they are the same. But are they? Well, not really. You see hydrating products are formulated to increase water content to plump up the skin while moisturizing products keep the skin soft and pliable by preventing water content in the skin from evaporating. But I thought I’ll discuss a little more here and to begin, let’s look at what exactly is moisturizing and hydrating.

Pevonia Caviar Line

Moisturizing makes skin soft and smooth. Moisturizing aims to form a barrier film on the skin’s surface to prevent moisture loss. This makes the skin feel softer and smoother. Moisturizers generally work in two ways with two types of ingredients. First, you have the humectants, such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, sorbitol, propylene glycol, lactic acid, and colloidal oatmeal, which work by attracting water molecules to the skin. And second are emollients, like sweet almond oil, apricot oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter, which work by softening skin and forming a protective layer on top, to prevent water loss by coating the skin with an oil-based substance to trap moisture in. Generally, the drier your skin, the thicker the moisturizer you need as they can help banish dry patches, flakiness and even fine lines. And in theory, a moisturizer should protect your skin from water loss until you wash your face but we know this does not always happen for various reasons, one of which is environmental pollution.
Hydrating makes skin plump and supple.
The upper layers on the epidermis needs a supply of water to make sure they are kept plump and smooth. Hence, hydrating facial products are designed for this purpose to increase the water content of the skin. They usually contain occlusive agents that keep moisture from leaving the skin and humectants that attract more moisture to the skin. So in a sense, hydrating products are often said to be moisturizing as well. However, to me, hydrating means the actual replenishment of moisture or water to skin cells. Therefore, you should replenish moisture to your skin first before you have your moisturizing skincare products applied.

Your skin needs to be hydrated and moisturized.
Going by the structure of our skin, we need both hydrating and moisturizing products applied on our skin. However, does this necessarily mean you need to apply two different products? Well, not so because many moisturizers these days are designed to be water-based, containing mostly water-binding ingredients such as hyaluronic acid with some oil. But say if your skin is very dry, it would be better to use two products, such as a hydrating toner or hydrating serum followed by a richer moisturizer.

Skincare Tip: Apply moisturizer to increase hydrating benefits.
Personally, I only use a hydrating toner prior to using my facial oil and moisturizer. I always ensure that I apply the products while my skin is still damp. You might like to know that applying moisturizer to a damp face helps to lock in the water from the upper layers of the skin, and prevents evaporation. The moisturizer will also help seal the hydrating benefits from the toner deep into the skin.

Prevent, Treat Wrinkles On Your Face

Wrinkles Form As Our Skin Ages

Everyone gets wrinkles on their skin. Wrinkles form as the skin ages and its underlying structure begins to break down. Environmental factors such as sun exposure and personal habits such as smoking can hasten this process and contribute to the formation of wrinkles. Habitual facial expressions can also cause wrinkles, as well as deeper lines such as smile and frown lines.

Wrinkles are a sign that the skin has lost elasticity due to age, exposure to the wind or sun, an unhealthy diet, smoking, or any combination of these factors. Sun damage, in particular, causes premature wrinkles. Ultraviolet rays from the sun can penetrate the skin and damage the underlying collagen and other support structures.

Geneva skin care and facials

The best way to prevent premature wrinkles is by maintaining good skin health. This includes practicing good nutrition, keeping the skin clean and moisturized, and avoiding things that can damage the skin, such as sun exposure and smoking. Good nutrition is essential to keeping skin healthy. A well-balanced diet that includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants is essential for good skin health.

Hygiene and hydration are also keys to maintaining healthy, youthful skin. Keeping the skin clean and well moisturized will help keep it supple and prevent wrinkles. Dirty skin is more vulnerable to infection and irritation. Over-use of cosmetics and similar products can damage the skin and aggravate existing skin conditions such as rashes, infections, and acne.

There are many behavior patterns associated with premature wrinkles. The most avoidable of these is smoking. Smoking can negatively affect skin health, leading to damage and infection. When a person smokes, the blood vessels constrict, which restricts blood flow to the extremities as well as the skin. Because the blood carries oxygen and other nutrients to the skin, this process deprives the skin of needed chemical compounds. Environmental pollutants such as automobile emissions have a similar effect. Wrinkles can also be the result if exposure to sun, wind, and other environmental conditions. Regular moisturizing, daily sunscreen application, and appropriate clothing choices are the best ways to address these risks.

Wrinkles are an inevitable part of aging. However, with good nutrition, proper skin care, and advanced wrinkle treatments available from a qualified cosmetic dermatologist, wrinkles can be diminished and even eliminated. Effective wrinkle treatment and wrinkle removal procedures performed by an expert cosmetic dermatologist can enhance skin health and maintain the skin’s aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Effective solutions for wrinkle treatment and removal provided by a cosmetic dermatologist include chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing, and IPL™ Photofacial. Through different means, these procedures remove damaged and dead outer layers of skin to reveal new, healthy skin and enhance the production of collagen. Chemical peels use an acid solution to essentially “burn” away the upper layers of skin. In a microdermabrasion treatment, the dermatologist uses a spray of fine crystals to remove outer layers of skin. Laser resurfacing and IPL™ Photofacial involve the use of intense light rays to break up and remove dead and damaged skin layers. After these treatments, wrinkles are eliminated or reduced, and the skin appears much younger and healthier.

BOTOX® Cosmetic and injectable fillers are also effective for wrinkle treatment and removal. They can minimize the appearance of wrinkles, and injectable fillers can be used to enhance facial features and address structural inconsistencies. Although there are exceptions, injectables generally provide aesthetic enhancement for a few months before requiring touchup treatments. The most common injectables are:

  • BOTOX® Cosmetic: BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are the most popular cosmetic enhancement treatment in the United States. In a BOTOX® treatment, injection of tiny amounts of botulinum toxin type A temporarily immobilizes muscles in the face that are responsible for wrinkles.
  • Collagen: Collagen is particularly effective for temporary wrinkle treatment and removal. Collagen can be used to fill in wrinkled areas of the skin, making it appear flatter and smoother. Collagen injections can also be used in a number of other applications, such as sculpting lips and filling in scars.
  • Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: Restylane® is an example of a hyaluronic acid gel that can be used to augment and smooth the skin, making it very effective for wrinkle treatment. Hyaluronic acid fillers have the advantage that they are less prone to provoking allergic reactions than some other injectable fillers.
  • Calcium Hydroxylapatite Fillers: Radiesse® and other calcium hydroxlapatite fillers trigger the production of natural collagen by the body. This provides wrinkle-removal effects that are especially long-lasting.
  • Fat Transfer: A fat transfer procedure involves removing fat from one part of the body, cleaning and filtering it, and then injecting it into another part of the body to treat wrinkles. This approach uses a substance from the patient’s own body, which has the advantage of added safety and compatibility.

The most dramatic methods for wrinkle treatment and removal are facial plastic surgery procedures such as a face lift, brow lift, and eye lift These procedures are popular and can effectively address wrinkles on the face with long-lasting results. Facial plastic surgery procedures tighten the facial skin and remove excess skin and fat from specific areas of the face, making the skin appear tighter and smoother. They are often performed in conjunction with cosmetic dermatology procedures to exfoliate the skin. Facial implant surgery can also be used to address wrinkles and improve the contours of the face. Popular options include cheek augmentation and chin augmentation. The neck lift is popular with patients who have excess skin folds and wrinkles around the jaw and neckline. The procedure is often performed to augment a face lift or other facial plastic surgery procedure.

Facials Improve Skin Health

Facials A Powerful Part Of Total Skin Care

Facials are a group of skin treatments intended to improve the cosmetic appearance of the skin. Facials also improve the health of the skin. In general, facials are thought to alter the texture, tone, coloring, or firmness of the skin in a way that many people consider attractive. A facial involves a variety of skin treatments, including steam, exfoliation, extraction, creams, lotions, facial masks, peels, and massage.

Facials usually involve the application of various mixtures to the skin, involving materials such as clay, seaweed, oils, and creams that all are applied to the skin to achieve different purposes. Some masks promote deep-cleansing, by penetrating the pores. Others can help heal acne scars or hyper-pigmentation, while others are for brightening your skin tone and complexion. Some masks dry or solidify on the face, almost like plaster. Other mixtures remain wet. A facial treatment can help revitalize, heal, and refresh your skin.

Chicago facial and skin care

Facials are as unique as you and your face.

Facials can focus on improving one aspect of the skin’s appearance, or they can offer a general benefit. A facial may focus on removing blemishes, eliminating discoloration, firming the skin, or unclogging pores. Facials are generally categorized as:

  • European facial
  • LED light therapy facial
  • Mini-facial

Throughout history, people have sought to change the appearance of their face to fit the values of the time. In ancient Egypt, they used scented oils and ointments to clean and soften their skin. Oils and creams also were used for protection against the hot sun and dry winds. Cleopatra used black mud as a mask. She used sea salts to exfoliate and she finished with an application of essential oils. So, facials have withstood the test of time.

We are pleased to say that herbal products and natural medicines are more integrated into the mainstream than ever. More facial compounds now include natural and organic substances.

Warm steam may be applied to the face prior to the application of the facial mask. A variety of materials are then applied to your face, either by hand or with a brush or towel. The mixture is applied to the front of the face while avoiding your lips, ears, nostrils, and head hairline. The lips, ears, and nostrils are avoided because the facial mixture may irritate mucous membranes.

Mixtures contain a variety of ingredients, from mud to caviar. As a whole, the mixture is generally intended to improve the appearance of the skin, remove dead skin cells and open the skin pores. The attendant then leaves the facial mask on for a period of time, usually 15-30 minutes. Depending on the mask ingredients and duration of the application, the facial mask may dry or it may stay moist. Several different layers of mixture may be applied. Though the sensation of having a thick substance spread on the skin may be an unusual one, patrons should never feel any discomfort or pain.

Pineal Gland and Light. Few people realize that the pineal gland is in fact a literal eye.The pineal gland is a pea-sized gland in the exact center of the brain and comes from the root word “pinea” which is Latin for “pinecone.” Pinecone/pineal symbolism appears all over the ancient world. Why are so many ancient cultures obsessed with pineal symbolism?  The answer may be found inside the gland itself. The interior of the pineal gland actually has retinal tissue composed of rods and cones (light receptors) just like the eye. It is even wired into the visual cortex in the brain. Natural, unfiltered light is necessary for the proper functioning of the pineal. The pineal gland converts light energy into an electrochemical impulse which feeds directly into the hypothalamus.

The hypothalamus mediates all of the vital processes of the body through it’s connections to the pituitary gland and the autonomic nervous system. The hypothalamus is filled with light sensitive cells which convert the electromagnetic signal of light into a neurochemical impulse, which is then carried directly into the pituitary gland. Is it a coincidence that the organ that has for thousands of years been called the 3rd eye actually has all the components needed for a functioning eye? Unfortunately for many of us, the pineal gland can become calcified from heavy metals and fluoride. Avoid fluoride and heavy metals, spend more time outdoors, limit the amount of time you wear sunglasses and regularly use your DreamSpa. The DreamSpa delivers beneficial light to the pineal gland.

Chicago Spa Emphasizes Benefits Of Facials

Facials Help Maintain, Regenerate Skin Health

Facials provide an opportunity to work with a professional skin care specialist who will analyze your skin, hear your concerns and show you how to properly care for your skin based on your personal needs and skin condition. A facial can help promote the overall health of your skin, which includes:

  • Stimulating blood flow
  • Softening skin
  • Removing dead skin
  • Encouraging new skin growth
  • Restoring skin complexion
  • Treating acne
  • Relieving stress
  • Hydrating chronic dry skin
  • Cleansing and detoxification

Choosing the type of facial that you need is the first step. Some facial treatments offer a deep cleanse of the skin, while others provide moisture to skin cells. Some facials can specifically treat acne.

Chicago facial and skin care

The Key Benefits Of Facials

Cleansing: Facials will deep cleanse your skin. Removing toxins from pollution and our diet is essential for healthy skin. Facials can reduce an overabundance of sebum, which is a natural substance that moisturizes and lubricates our skin. Overproduction of sebum can cause skin problems, including blackheads and acne. Cleansing facials open the pores of the skin, remove dead skin and toxins from the face, and clean the surface of the skin through exfoliation that tightens and firms the skin. Steam treatments raise the temperature of the skin and soften the hardened oil in the pore, making it easier for extraction and deep pore cleansing.

Exfoliation: Exfoliation stimulates regeneration of skin cells, while removing dead, dry skin. Exfoliation also can break down stubborn marks on the skin. Exfoliation also allows the active ingredients in skin care products to absorb deeper within the skin for maximum benefit.

Increased Circulation: A facial massage helps increase microcirculation to bring new nutrients to skin cells. This gives your skin a healthy glow and pumps skin cells full of with vital nutrients and water, which reduces the appearance of wrinkled and dry skin. Nutrition, circulation and hydration are essential for youthful, healthy skin. A facial can help smooth fine lines, while promoting collagen production, which is essential to anti-aging and healthy skin.

Along with all of the skin benefits stated above, facials are incredibly relaxing and stress reducing and should be performed every 4-6 weeks. Facial treatments can help slow the aging process of our skin, while contributing to our overall health. Facials are not the silver-bullet solution, however. While highly beneficial, facials can’t overcome a the negative impacts of poor diet and a lack of exercise. Healthy skin is just part of your overall health.

Heart Rhythm Reflects Health, Harmony

Positive Thoughts Critical To Health, Beauty

According to new research from the HeartMath Institute, our thoughts and emotions affect us and others more than we realized. Our hearts are an amazing source of intelligence, the seat of our emotions and the source and messenger of vital information essential for physical health and balance. Research shows that our heart rhythm patterns are more smooth and balanced with positive emotions and more jagged and erratic with negative emotions. This is more positive feedback that our emotions and thoughts affect our body inside and out–including our skin.

Energy healing facial treatments and sound energy therapy are both great ways to help you with positive emotions to keep your body healthy and younger looking.

Take a look at this short video clip to learn more.
What is heart intelligence? Heart intelligence is the flow of intuitive awareness, understanding and inner guidance we experience when the mind and emotions are brought into coherent alignment with the heart. It can be activated through self-initiated practice. The more coherent we are and the more we pay attention to this deeper intuitive inner guidance, the greater our ability to access this intelligence more frequently. Heart intelligence underlies cellular organization and guides and evolves organisms toward increased order, awareness and coherence of their bodies’ systems.

Natural Anti-Aging Secrets

Chicago Spa Offers Seven Tips For Healthier Skin

Sesame Seed Oil: Massage organic sesame oil all over your body. Working it into the skin gets your blood circulating. Plus, the oil hydrates your skin, giving it a healthy glow. Then take a shower and rinse away dead skin cells.

Fish Oil: Anti-inflammatories are the best anti-agers out there. From improving heart and immune functions to helping hair grow and skin look supple, they truly do wonders. I take three 500 milligram capsules of omega-3 fish oil in the morning and at night. Look for labels that say, ‘molecularly distilled for purity,’ which means pesticide-free.

Geneva skin care and facials

Avoid White Sugar: The number-one ingredient that I avoid in my diet is processed sugar. The reason: It speeds up the aging process by binding to and eventually weakening the collagen in your skin, which can lead to premature wrinkles and sagging. Eat lots of vegetables and fruits every day.

Use White Sugar As An Exfoliant: Before you toss out that bag of white sugar, add it to your skin care arsenal. In the shower, lather your hands with a mild cleanser, add a handful of white sugar, and rub it all over your face and body. It makes your skin very smooth.

Treat Eyes With Extra Care: I treat the skin around my eyes separately. Face creams can be too irritating, but products made for this delicate area work wonders for smoothing fine lines.

Pamper Your Hands: Take care of your hands with the same routine used on your face. Exfoliate your hands and use a mask on them, too. Try an enzyme concentrate on your face and hands.

Give Your Skin Vitamins: Try an over-the-counter topical vitamin C cream with a 30 percent concentration. It’s a wonderful antioxidant that helps skin repair itself from sun damage. Another way to inject your skin with moisture and vitamin C is with bananas. Mash up a banana and apply it to your skin as a mask. Let it set just like a regular mask and wash it off after it drys.

Also, be sure to minimize your consumption of alcohol and tobacco. We also urge you to minimize your use of makeup. Although makeup might make you look happy and healthy, it can clog pores and inject toxins directly into your body.

Charcoal Facials The Latest Skin Care Treatment

Editor’s Note: The experts at Skin Care Plus haven’t added charcoal facials to the services, yet, but it’s catching on like wildfire. What have you heard?

Extracts Toxins From The Skin

Activated charcoal is the latest ingredient to take the beauty industry by storm — giving other hipster favorites like clay and coconut oil a run for their money. And now the black residue is being used in everything from teeth-whitening solutions to a lemonade cleanse, and even as the key ingredient in an expensive new facial.

Geneva skin care and facial

“Charcoal is known to absorb 100 to 200 times its weight in impurities, making it an excellent natural ingredient to help purify and deep-clean skin,” says Wendy Brooks, director of global product development at Origins, a beauty company. She says the company’s Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask is one of its best sellers. At Ling Skincare and Spa near Union Square in New York, the Charcoal Facial ($260), incorporates crushed black charcoal as a soft powder mask after extractions with claims that it helps draw out toxins. The 90-minute treatment features a 15-minute charcoal mask, a thick, pudding-like mixture that is applied to the face with a brush. And while dermatologists aren’t buying the hype, our face did feel pretty good post treatment.

Activated charcoal, created when oxygen is added to regular charcoal, is mostly used in the medical community to treat poison, GI tract infections and nausea. Regular charcoal, like the bricks you barbecue with, is used in everything from water filters to vacuum cleaners.

“How well does (charcoal) work on the skin? Truthfully, there isn’t solid clinical data one way or the other,” says dermatologist Dr. Craig Kraffert, who chalks up the popularity of the stuff to its weird factor. “Using a pitch-black product to purify the skin sounds both intriguing and cool … the uniqueness of the ingredient itself, especially its color, is likely the main driver behind the recent surge in popularity of activated charcoal facial cleansers and masks.”

Science aside, beauty bloggers are bonkers for the black goo, citing it as the new way to relieve and cleanse the body.

“I’ve been on this natural-living path,” says Shiva Rose, who blogs at the “holistic, healthy and authentic lifestyle” site The Local Rose, and keeps activated charcoal capsules with her whenever she travels. “I read that it can absorb different things for gastrointestinal issues, so I just started taking it with me.”

Rose says she thinks that, aside from healing her daughter’s spider and mosquito bites when mixed with a little baking soda, activated charcoal was excellent for skin treatments and even whitening her teeth.

“It makes your face dark,” says Rose, “but it draws out impurities from your pores.”

Carrot juice really does add pigment to the skin, which means that it adds to your complexion.

Seaweed is an effective facial treatment. It helps detox and open the pores, while nourishing the skin.

Turmeric is a popular spice and a healthy addition to any diet. It boosts circulation and helps people of all ages fight acne.

Skin Care Secrets From Glamour Girls

Models Share Top Tricks For Glowing Skin

Contrary to popular belief, not all models are born with glowing skin. They deal with complexion quirks like anyone else—and they’re often made ten times worse thanks to the amount of makeup they have to wear on the job. Although models are genetically gifted, they’re not immune to acne, puffy eyes, dry skin, and a host of other beauty problems.

For models, having anything but a glowing complexion is simply not an option. “Taking care of their skin is not about being vain or wanting to feel good—it’s an investment in their career,” says Samantha Wright, an esthetician at Dangene, a skin clinic in New York that counts A-list models and actresses among their clients.

Geneva skin care and facial

Understandably, models approach skin care a little differently than many of us—their jobs depend on it. Here’s what these professional beauties do to keep their skin in peak condition.

They make a plan—and stick with it.
Fashion Week happens in the spring and fall, but models prep all year ‘round. “I recommend people prepare months in advance before any large event,” says Dr. Jennifer MacGregor, a dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York City. “I usually start people six months out, but three months is okay.” Along with a topical skin-care regimen, she may recommend lasers (such as Fraxel or Permea) to address more challenging issues, such as hyperpigmentation.

They think of ALL of their skin.
Models never know when they’ll need to wear a plunging neckline or backless dress on the runway. That’s why their skin care doesn’t end with their face. “We can focus on the body, smoothing out the chest and the back—even the stomach,” Wright says. An appointment at Dangene starts with a head-to-toe evaluation, followed by customized treatments that could include mole removal, microdermabrasion, or a collagen-boosting LED session. “We might do an acid wash to get rid of all the dead skin cells,” Wright explains, “so when a model walks down the runway, she glistens, shines, and is flawless.”

They build a relationship with their dermatologist.
Dermatologist Dr. Jeannette Graf often answers questions via email or text, teaching her model clients how to treat mini-emergencies at home. Make sure your powder room is stalked with the lotions and potions you need to treat a blemish, calm your skin, or get an immediate glow.

They know what to do when zit happens.
If models break out before a big shoot, they have a couple of treatment options. “If it’s a deep cyst, they can come in for an emergency cortisone injection,” says Dr. MacGregor. By reducing inflammation, these shots reduce the size and redness of even the biggest blemish. For smaller breakouts, Dr. MacGregor recommendsNeutrogena On-the-Spot acne treatment. “It’s a more mild benzoyl peroxide that won’t cause as much irritation,” she explains. (For more on battling blemishes, read this.)

They make their facials count.
“Even models get stressed out,” says celebrity esthetician Joanna Vargas. “They’re running around and not eating well.” When this happens, Vargas gives models a Power Peel treatment. First, a mild fruit acid and paprika peel gently resurfaces the skin. Then, models sit under a healing LED light before oxygen is sprayed to brighten the complexion and destroy bacteria. “They look perfect without us having to do a lot of intervention,” Vargas says. And for a model, that’s just a perk of the job.
